I am a psychoanalyst, author, and radio show host. My area of specialty is the psychology of eating. If you have an unhealthy, unhappy relationship to food, I can help.
After completing his exquisite statue of The David, the artist and sculptor Michelangelo was asked, “Michelangelo, how do you turn these blocks of stone into statues?”
He replied, “I did not turn the stone into statues. I free the statues from the stone.”
This perfectly aligns with my philosophy of therapy. In treatment, we identify and shift what is preventing you from living your happiest life. We chip away at what is keeping you stuck, so you can be your most authentic and genuine self. We do not focus on what you are eating, but on what is eating “at” you.
As a psychoanalyst, I know that eating disorders are a solution to the problem, not “the” problem (even though it sure feels as if it’s “the” problem). In the 16 years that I have been treating eating disorders, primarily binge eating and bulimia, I have helped countless patients and clients in my online programs to transform their relationship to food by healing their relationship to themselves.
My book on the psychoanalytic understanding of eating disorders has been called, “An exemplary book by a thought and practice pioneer in this field” and, “Accessible and illuminating.” I contributed to two books on psychoanalysis, and my chapter on “The Origins & Fundamentals Of Psychoanalysis” is part of the curriculum at Harvard Medical School to teach medical students about psychoanalysis. My next book, which I co-edited with the renowned analyst Dr. Salman Akhtar, is on addictions and will be published by Karnac in 2019.
I write an award-winning blog, Make Peace With Food and my articles have appeared in online publications both nationally and internationally, in Dubai, London and Hong Kong. I have been featured Redbook, Real Simple, Psychology Today, Prevention, Dr. Drew Podcast, Healthline, Los Angeles Times, and many more.
I offer consultation and have an online program, Kick The Diet Habit, designed to help people identify and shift what is eating “at” them instead of focusing on what they are eating. I also host a weekly radio show on LA Talk Radio.
